Kerala wedding packages, taken apart
Nobody in Kerala sells a genuinely all-inclusive wedding. The venue sells a hall or a plate; everything else is assembled. The word "package" usually hides which parts, so here is what is in one at each scale.
What does a Kerala wedding package include?
A Kerala wedding package is normally three contracts wearing one name: the venue's, the kitchen's, and the production. What the venue sells depends on its model — an auditorium or convention centre rents the hall for the day and leaves catering to a cook you appoint, a hotel sells food per plate against a minimum guarantee with the space folded in, and a resort sells exclusive use of the property for a number of nights. Decor and production, guest transfers, permissions and the planning itself sit outside all three and are assembled on top. Across the 34 Kerala venues that have published a per-plate range to The Kerala Wedding Collective, catering runs ₹2,500 to ₹20,000 a head, with a midpoint of ₹5,875, as of August 2026. Anyone quoting a single per-person figure for a Kerala wedding is quoting one of those three models and leaving the rest out.
Three scales, three different packages
The auditorium wedding. A kalyana mandapam or convention centre rents you the date. The hall figure barely moves between four hundred guests and nine hundred, which is exactly what makes the big Kerala wedding possible, and the catering is a separate contract with a sadya cook you choose. The package here is really a list of separate bookings held together by a schedule. What decides the budget is the caterer, not the hall.
The hotel wedding. A city hotel or five-star sells plates against a minimum guarantee. The banquet space usually carries no flat hire charge; instead it has a plate count it must earn, and the negotiation is about the count and the shortfall rather than about the hall. Rooms come as a block with a release date. This is the model where a "package" most resembles the word, and also where the exclusions are easiest to miss.
The resort buyout. Backwater and heritage properties price exclusive use from what the nights would otherwise have earned, so a smaller guest list does not shrink the figure much. What you are buying is the property and the privacy; the food, the build and the logistics of getting everything to a lakeside are all on top. What "per person" means here, and what it hides
Families ask for a per-person figure because it is the only unit that compares across venues, and it is the unit most likely to mislead. A hotel per-plate rate buys food and service in a room the hotel is also providing. An outside sadya cook's per-leaf rate buys the food and nothing else — no hall, no service staff, no room. Putting the two side by side and concluding the hotel is expensive misreads what each number includes. We publish the venue side, 34 venues of it, because venues will put it in writing; we do not publish a per-leaf caterer rate, because we do not hold a verified one and the page most likely to be quoted back at a negotiation is the worst place to invent a figure.
How to read a package someone else sends you
Six questions, in this order. What is the minimum guarantee for the specific space, and what does the shortfall cost if we come in under it? Is the day rate for how many hours, and when can our team start building? Is an outside caterer or decorator permitted, and is there an access charge? What is in the room block and when is it released? What is the wet-weather plan, physically, and who pays for it? And is the planner's fee a flat figure or a percentage of everything above? Do Kerala venues offer all-inclusive wedding packages?
Venues sell what they own: an auditorium sells the hall for the day, a hotel sells food per plate against a minimum with the space included, a resort sells exclusive use of the property. Decor and production, transfers, permissions and the planning are outside all three. An all-inclusive package in Kerala is something assembled across those contracts, and the useful question is what each part costs and who you pay for it.
What does a Kerala wedding package cost per person?
The honest answer depends on the model. At the 34 Kerala venues that have published a per-plate range to us, catering runs ₹2,500 to ₹20,000 a head with a midpoint of ₹5,875, food and service only. Rooms, decor, production and transfers sit on top and are quoted per wedding, so a single per-person figure covering all of it would be wrong for yours. Is decor included in a Kerala wedding package?
Not in a venue package. A venue may include a basic stage or a standard set. Anything designed for your wedding — the mandap, the aisle, the stage, the flowers, the lighting — is a separate line, quoted before it is built. That is deliberate: it is the line that varies most between quotes, and the one where a fixed "package" number hides the most.
Can we bring our own caterer to a Kerala wedding venue?
At auditoriums and convention centres, usually yes, sometimes against an access charge — which is a large part of why families choose them. At hotels, usually no. Confirm it in writing before you book a cook, and confirm whether the rule differs between the ceremony and the reception.
Are guest transfers included?
Not by the venue. We include them in what we assemble, contracted with the transport operator directly at cost, with arrivals matched to flights.
