Planning a Kerala Brahmin wedding

Where a Nair ceremony can be done inside half an hour, a Brahmin wedding runs through a sequence of rites over several hours, often across more than one morning. The practical consequence is simple and frequently missed: you need a venue that will let you light a fire indoors, for hours, with a priest directing it, and you need the room booked long enough that the following event is not waiting at the door.

A number of Kerala hotels will not permit an open homam inside a ballroom, or will permit it only in a specific outdoor area. Ask that question first, in writing. It disqualifies venues faster than budget does.

Guruvayur draws families from well outside the state, and temple weddings there run to their own schedule and their own queue. If the temple is the point of the wedding, the reception venue and everything else gets planned around a slot you do not control.

The catering is a vegetarian sadya, and at this end of the market the cooking is scrutinised closely. Families frequently bring a cook they have used before rather than take the venue kitchen, which is a conversation to have with the venue before signing rather than a fortnight out.

What a planner needs from you

A worked catering budget for 250 guests

A scenario, not a quote: 250 guests multiplied by the per-plate bands the venues in our book have published, as of August 2026. The bands buy food and service at a hotel or convention venue. An auditorium on a day rental with an outside cook is a different and usually lower arithmetic, and we do not hold a verified per-leaf rate to print for it.

The timeline, built backwards from the date

The pattern only. The date itself comes from your own authority, and we would not print a muhurtham for a family we have not met.

1. Twelve months outThe muhurtham from the astrologer, and with it the priest, who will tell you how long the sequence of rites runs and whether it spans two mornings.
2. The same fortnightShortlist venues by one question before any other: is an open homam permitted, and where. Get the answer in writing. It removes venues faster than budget does.
3. Ten months outHold the room for the full duration, with no event scheduled behind it. Book the sadya cook; families at this end of the market often bring one they know, which the venue has to agree to now, not a fortnight out.
4. Six months outIf Guruvayur is the point of the wedding, the reception venue and the travel plan are built around a temple slot you do not control. Rooms near the temple go early.
5. Eight weeks outFinal counts for each day of the ceremony, and the list of ritual materials the priest needs, handed to the venue so nothing is missing at five in the morning.
6. The morningsEarly starts on both days if the priest says two. The fire, the rites in sequence, the sadya at midday, and a venue that has been told the room is not free until the priest says so.
