Planning an Ezhava wedding
Short ceremony, large guest list, and a sadya that everybody in the room can judge.
The shape of the day is close to a Nair wedding: a muhurtham fixed by the astrologer, a brief ceremony, and a sadya afterwards that does most of the work. Guest counts tend to run larger, and that is the number that drives the venue choice more than anything aesthetic.
Auditoriums remain the default for good reason. Four hundred people eating off leaves at nine in the morning is a specific operation, and the halls are built for it. Where families want something with a view, the usual compromise is to keep the ceremony local and hold an evening reception at a resort.
If the guest list is over three hundred, filter venues by capacity before you fall in love with any of them. Several of the best-looking properties in the state top out well below that, and the backwater resorts in particular are small.

A worked catering budget for 600 guests
A scenario, not a quote: 600 guests multiplied by the per-plate bands the venues in our book have published, as of August 2026. The bands buy food and service at a hotel or convention venue. An auditorium on a day rental with an outside cook is a different and usually lower arithmetic, and we do not hold a verified per-leaf rate to print for it.

The pattern only. The date itself comes from your own authority, and we would not print a muhurtham for a family we have not met.
- Twelve months outThe muhurtham from the astrologer. Then filter the venue book by capacity before anyone falls for a photograph; the backwater properties are smaller than they look.
- The same fortnightBook the hall for the morning. If the family wants a view, keep the rite local and hold a resort for the evening reception separately.
- Ten months outBook the sadya cook and settle how many sittings the dining hall will need for your count.
- Five months outTransport for two venues if there are two, rooms for the family, and decor concentrated where the cameras face.
- Eight weeks outFinal count to the cook inside the contract window. Kerala families count generously and the caterer bills on the number confirmed.
- The dayMuhurtham in the morning, the rite brief, the sadya in sittings straight after. Reception in the evening if there is one, at a venue that has had the whole afternoon to set.
