Planning a Muslim wedding in Kerala

The nikah itself is short and can happen at the mosque or at home. What surrounds it is bigger: the mylanchi night before, where henna is applied and which in the Malabar districts is a full event with its own guest list, and the reception feast afterwards.

Kozhikode, Malappuram and Kannur are the centre of gravity, and the catering there is a genuine speciality rather than a regional variation. Malabar biryani, pathiri, and the sweets that go with them are cooked by people who cook nothing else, and a hotel that offers a "Malabar section" on a buffet is not the same thing. In this belt the caterer is often chosen before the venue.

Dates need more forward planning than most families expect. Ramadan and Muharram are both avoided, and because they follow the lunar calendar they move roughly eleven days earlier each year. A month that is clear when you start planning a long engagement can be inside Ramadan by the time the wedding comes round, so check the year you are actually marrying in, not the current one.

Guest numbers in this belt run high, and many venues in the north of the state are sized for it. That works in your favour: the large halls around Kozhikode and Malappuram handle numbers that would be difficult at a backwater resort.

What a planner needs from you

A worked catering budget for 800 guests

A scenario, not a quote: 800 guests multiplied by the per-plate bands on file for the venues in our book, as of August 2026. The bands buy food and service at a hotel or convention venue. An auditorium on a day rental with an outside cook is a different and usually lower arithmetic, and we do not hold a verified per-leaf rate to print for it.

The timeline, built backwards from the date

The pattern only. The date itself comes from your own authority, and we would not print a muhurtham for a family we have not met.

1. Twelve months outAgree the date with the family and the mahal against the lunar calendar for the year you are marrying in. Ramadan and Muharram move about eleven days earlier each year, so check the wedding year, not this one.
2. Eleven months outBook the Malabar caterer. Around Kozhikode and Malappuram the cook is often fixed before the venue, and the biryani and pathiri teams the families want are taken first.
3. Ten months outHold the venue for the reception, and a second space or the home for the mylanchi night, which carries its own guest list and its own catering.
4. Six months outRoom blocks and airport runs. Kannur and Calicut both take direct flights from the Gulf, which is where much of the family will be arriving from.
5. Eight weeks outFinal counts to the caterer for both nights. Confirm the nikah timing with the mosque or the qazi and print the run sheet for the two days.
6. The two daysMylanchi night first, henna and its own feast. The nikah itself is short, at the mosque or at home. The reception follows, and the food is what the guests travelled for.
