Planning a Muslim wedding in Kerala
The wedding is usually two events on two days, and the second one is the one people travel for.
The nikah itself is short and can happen at the mosque or at home. What surrounds it is bigger: the mylanchi night before, where henna is applied and which in the Malabar districts is a full event with its own guest list, and the reception feast afterwards.
Kozhikode, Malappuram and Kannur are the centre of gravity, and the catering there is a genuine speciality rather than a regional variation. Malabar biryani, pathiri, and the sweets that go with them are cooked by people who cook nothing else, and a hotel that offers a "Malabar section" on a buffet is not the same thing.
