Planning a Nair wedding

The muhurtham comes from the astrologer, and it does not negotiate. It can fall at 5.40 in the morning. The entire day is then built backwards from that one moment, which means hair and makeup starting somewhere around three, guests arriving in the dark, and a venue that will actually open its gates and run its kitchen at that hour. Not all of them will. It is worth asking before you book rather than after.

Because the rite is brief, the weight of the day sits on the two things around it: the arrival and the sadya. Guests remember walking in, and they remember the meal. A long, elaborate ceremony structure is not what you are buying here, and money spent trying to stretch the ceremony usually shows.

Most Nair weddings still happen in an auditorium rather than a resort. That is not a budget decision so much as a practical one — a kalyana mandapam is built for four hundred people to eat off banana leaves at nine in the morning, and a beach resort is not. Families who want the resort setting often keep the muhurtham at the auditorium or temple and hold the reception separately in the evening.

The sadya is the part to spend time on. It is vegetarian, it is served on a leaf in a fixed order, and people from the state will notice the difference between a kitchen that does this every week and a hotel banquet team doing its best. Ask who is actually cooking.

What a planner needs from you

A worked catering budget for 400 guests

A scenario, not a quote: 400 guests multiplied by the per-plate bands the venues in our book have published, as of August 2026. The bands buy food and service at a hotel or convention venue. An auditorium on a day rental with an outside cook is a different and usually lower arithmetic, and we do not hold a verified per-leaf rate to print for it.

The timeline, built backwards from the date

The pattern only. The date itself comes from your own authority, and we would not print a muhurtham for a family we have not met.

1. Twelve months outThe astrologer gives the muhurtham. It may fall before sunrise. Everything below is scheduled backwards from that one moment.
2. The same fortnightBook the hall. Ask in writing whether the gates and the kitchen run at five in the morning, because not every venue will, and the good halls sell the strong muhurtham mornings a year out.
3. Ten months outBook the sadya cook. In Kerala the caterer is a headline booking, and the teams families trust are taken nearly as early as the halls. Taste on one of their working days.
4. Five months outTransport for guests arriving in the dark, rooms nearby for the families, and the decor concentrated on the stage and the entrance where every photograph happens.
5. Eight weeks outFinal count to the cook. Agree the number of sittings with the hall from its dining-hall capacity, not from the headcount.
6. The morning, built backwardsMuhurtham at the hour given. Hair and make-up three to four hours before it. Guests seated thirty minutes before. The rite itself often inside half an hour. First sitting of the sadya as the rite ends, and the third sitting eats on time only if the first one did.
