Sadya, biryani, and what wedding food costs in Kerala
The meal is the part of a Kerala wedding that several hundred guests are individually qualified to judge. It is also where two very different price quotes get mistaken for each other.
How much does a wedding sadya cost per person in Kerala?
There are two different numbers and they get confused constantly. A hotel or resort quotes a per-plate rate that includes service, staff and the room: across 36 named Kerala venues those run ₹2,500 to ₹20,000 a head, with a midpoint of ₹5,875. An outside sadya caterer working at an auditorium quotes a per-leaf rate for the food alone, which is a much lower figure and does not include the hall, the staff or the service. Comparing one against the other is the single most common budgeting mistake we see.
Two numbers, two different things
A resort in Kumarakom quoting ₹9,500 a plate and a sadya cook in Thrissur quoting a few hundred a leaf are not competing offers. The first buys the room, the staff, the service and the food. The second buys the food. Families comparing them side by side conclude the resort is robbing them, which is not quite what is happening.
We publish the venue side of that because venues will put it in writing. We do not publish a per-leaf caterer rate, because we do not hold a verified one and inventing a number on the page most likely to be quoted back at a negotiation would be a poor way to start.
Three cuisines, not one
Hindu weddings run a vegetarian sadya on a leaf, in a fixed order. Syrian Christian receptions are non-vegetarian, with beef, duck and appam as the centre rather than as additions. Malabar Muslim weddings are built on biryani and pathiri, and around Kozhikode the caterer is frequently booked before the venue. A hotel that offers all three from one banquet kitchen is usually good at one of them.
The question to ask a venue
Ask who is physically cooking the wedding meal, and whether you may bring someone in. The answer decides more about how the food lands than the price does. Then taste it, on a normal working day rather than at a tasting laid on for you.
If the muhurtham is early, ask what the kitchen can actually serve at that hour. A sadya at nine in the morning is routine here. A full service at six is not, and not every venue will do it.

How much does a wedding sadya cost per person in Kerala?
There are two different numbers and they get confused constantly. Is a Kerala wedding sadya vegetarian?
A Hindu wedding sadya is vegetarian, served on a banana leaf in a set order. A Syrian Christian wedding reception is not: beef, duck and appam are core to it. A Malabar Muslim wedding feast is built around biryani and pathiri. The three are different cuisines and generally need different kitchens.
Should you use the venue kitchen or an outside caterer?
It depends on what is being served and where. Auditorium weddings almost always bring in a specialist sadya cook. Hotels usually require you to use their kitchen, and some will not permit outside catering at all. If a particular cook matters to your family, confirm the venue allows them in writing before you book, not afterwards.
How many dishes are in a wedding sadya?
It varies by family and district rather than following one fixed count. What is consistent is the order things are served in and the position of each item on the leaf, and that is what people from the state notice when a kitchen gets it wrong.
