Planning a Christian wedding in Kerala

The service is held in the morning, usually finishing between ten and half past eleven. That leaves you a reception in the middle of the day, in the hottest part of it, with guests who have already been sitting in a church for an hour. Where that reception happens, and how far it is from the church, is the decision that shapes the whole day.

Most families keep the two within twenty minutes of each other. In and around Kottayam, Thrissur and Ernakulam that is straightforward. It gets harder if the family church is inland and the reception venue is on the water at Kumarakom or Bolgatty, which is a common wish and a real logistical cost: you are moving several hundred people at midday, and the convoy sets the schedule for everything after it.

The date is not fully yours to pick. Kerala churches generally do not celebrate weddings through the fifty days of Lent before Easter, or the twenty-five day Nombu before Christmas. Both move against the Gregorian calendar, so they land on different weeks every year, and a date that is fine one year sits inside Lent three years later. Popular churches take bookings more than a year ahead, and the church diary, not the venue diary, is the one to fix first.

The meal is where Kerala Christian weddings part company with the rest of the state. A Syrian Christian reception is not a vegetarian sadya. Beef, duck, and appam turn up on the same leaf, and the kitchen you hire needs to be one that cooks that food properly rather than a hotel banquet team producing a generic buffet with a couple of local dishes bolted on. Ask any venue directly whether the wedding menu is cooked in-house or brought in, and taste it before you sign.

A worked catering budget for 500 guests

A scenario, not a quote: 500 guests multiplied by the per-plate bands the venues in our book have published, as of August 2026. The bands buy food and service at a hotel or convention venue. An auditorium on a day rental with an outside cook is a different and usually lower arithmetic, and we do not hold a verified per-leaf rate to print for it.

The timeline, built backwards from the date

The pattern only. The date itself comes from your own authority, and we would not print a muhurtham for a family we have not met.

1. Fourteen to twelve months outAsk the parish for the date. The fifty days of Lent and the twenty-five day Nombu move every year, and the popular churches take bookings more than a year ahead. Fix the church before anything else.
2. The same fortnightHold the reception venue, within twenty minutes of the church if the guest list is large. The convoy at midday sets the schedule for the rest of the day.
3. Ten months outSettle who cooks. Ask the venue whether the Syrian Christian menu is cooked in-house and taste it on an ordinary day of theirs. If the answer is an outside caterer, contract them now.
4. Six months outRoom blocks for family flying in, transport for the elders between church and hall, and the photographer, who will be booked across the same post-Easter and pre-Christmas run as every other family.
5. Eight weeks outFinal count to the kitchen inside the contract window. Print the run sheet with the church start, the expected finish and the time the first guests reach the hall.
6. The morningService in the morning, usually finishing between ten and half past eleven. Reception straight after, in the heat of the day, which is why the hall needs to be cool and the food ready to serve when the convoy arrives.
