Backwater wedding venues: Kumarakom and Alleppey

Two shores, two different weddings

Kumarakom on the Kottayam side of Vembanad holds the heritage resorts and the lake-facing lawns most people picture when they say a backwater wedding. Alleppey and Mararikulam on the other side run wider: lake-edge resorts, converted farmhouses, and beach properties a few minutes inland from the water. Kollam and Ashtamudi in the south are the quieter end of the same country. All of it is flat, which is the practical advantage over the hills — an elderly guest list moves through these properties easily.

Two things decide a backwater budget more than the venue does. Everything travels in — flowers, decorators, extra kitchen staff, sometimes the sound system — and that lands on the production line rather than the catering line. And room stock is small, so the guest list either sleeps on the property or spreads across neighbouring resorts, which turns the morning of the muhurtham into a convoy. Planning a wedding in the backwaters

• Getting there. Cochin International Airport (COK) serves Kumarakom and Alappuzha; Thiruvananthapuram (TRV) is the nearer airport for Kollam and Ashtamudi.
