In short

Should we hold our Kerala wedding in Kochi, the backwaters or the hills?

Choose by guest list and logistics. Kochi carries every scale, from heritage weddings under 200 in Fort Kochi to convention-centre weddings in the thousands, with the airport and hotel stock to move a travelling guest list easily. The backwaters suit stay-over weddings of roughly 100 to 400 guests, where the resort is home for the weekend and the ceremony sits on the water. The hills (Munnar, Thekkady, Wayanad) reward smaller lists, around 80 to 200, that accept winding roads in exchange for tea country and cool evenings.

Families rarely arrive undecided about Kerala. They arrive undecided about which Kerala: the harbour city, the lake country, or the tea mountains. All three host weddings well, none of them hosts every wedding well, and the choice stops being difficult the moment it is asked as three practical questions instead of one romantic one.

Question one: how many people are coming?

Kochi absorbs any number. The city runs four kinds of venue side by side: five-star hotels that put hundreds of guests to bed above their own banquet halls, heritage properties in Fort Kochi and on the islands for weddings that want to stay under two hundred, convention centres out on the airport belt that seat weddings in the thousands on a day rental, and the harbour-view venues that carry the showpiece receptions. Whatever the list, something among the wedding venues in Kochi fits it.

The backwaters hold the middle beautifully. The lake resorts in our book range from 150 guests to 2,000 standing on Kumarakom Lake Resort's lawns, but the format is the stay-over weekend: the guest list sleeps on the property, and the room block becomes the budget’s biggest line. The list has to fit the rooms, which is the honest constraint of the lake country.

The hills prefer intimacy. Room stocks in Munnar, Thekkady and Wayanad are modest by design, so 80 to 200 guests is the natural range, and the estate buyout (the property taken whole) is the best format under about 120. Bigger lists split across neighbouring stays, and the winding roads punish that arrangement.

Question two: how does everyone get there?

Kochi is the easy answer: an international airport, and a hotel or convention centre within a short drive of it for guest lists that are mostly flying in. The one local wrinkle worth knowing is that the airport sits well outside the city centre, so a fly-in wedding often does better on the airport belt than at the Marine Drive waterfront, especially in season traffic.

The backwaters add a transfer, sometimes partly by boat, which done properly is an arrival guests never forget. The hills add the real cost: mountain roads that turn a two-hour map distance into three, which asks genuine consideration for elderly guests and makes the transport plan matter more than anywhere else in the state. None of this rules anywhere out. It just belongs in the decision rather than as a surprise. The airport-by-airport picture is in our guest-logistics post.

Question three: what do you want in the photographs?

This is the question families think they are asking all along. Kochi gives you the harbour, colonial streets and grand banquet scale. The backwaters give you water in every frame — the jetty ceremony, the boats, sunset over the lake. The hills give you tea gardens, mist and a light no lawn in the plains can imitate, plus evenings cool enough for a shawl, which guests from the Gulf tend to treat as a holiday in itself.

The composite answer

Plenty of weddings refuse to choose, and the state indulges them: the big ceremony in Kochi where the numbers work, then a small backwater or hill event where the scenery works: the reception, the honeymoon, the family weekend. Kerala’s regions sit close enough that the combination is a schedule, not an expedition. Our guide to a destination wedding in Kerala makes the fuller case, and the venue book holds all six regions with the numbers on our file.

Ask the three questions in order — list, logistics, pictures. In our experience the region picks itself before the third one is finished.

Questions we hear on this

Which part of Kerala is easiest for guests flying in?

Kochi, comfortably: an international airport with a convention and hotel belt a short drive from the runway, and the city’s full hotel stock behind it. The backwaters are a manageable onward transfer from Kochi’s airport; the hill stations add mountain roads that stretch drive times, which matters for elderly guests and tight itineraries.

Can we combine two regions in one wedding?

Yes, and it is a common shape: the large ceremony in Kochi where capacity and logistics are easy, with a smaller backwater or hill event around it for the near family. The regions are close enough that the combination is a scheduling exercise rather than a second destination.

Which region is best for a small wedding?

All three have an answer, which is the nice problem. Fort Kochi’s heritage properties host city weddings under 200 with real character; the smaller backwater resorts make a weekend of a hundred guests feel complete; and a hill estate taken whole is the most private version — the natural home of weddings under about 120.

What happens after you enquire

  1. A planner replies on WhatsApp within one working day. Expect questions about the date, the numbers and the community the wedding follows.
  2. A written scope and a fee band. What we would do for this wedding and what it costs, before you decide anything.
  3. A video walkthrough if you are abroad. Shortlisted venues walked on camera in your evening, so the single trip to Kerala is spent deciding, not looking.
